New Treatment: Table Thai Massage + Steam Green Holiday Tips GREEN! Lights: Buy strings of LED lights, which look the same as conventional incandescent bulbs but last longer and use 80 to 90 percent less energy. LED lights are also safer since they don’t put out much heat. You can also invest in timers that automatically shut your lights off and cost as little as $9.99. Shopping: Instead of coming home with 15 shopping bags, bring your own to the store. Reuse heavy duty paper bags, or even better, bring your machine washable canvas bags. Wrapping: Instead of buying new wrapping paper, get creative with what you have around the house. If you love traditional wrapping paper, buy the recycled versions from sites like www.fishlipspaperdesigns.com and www.paporganics.com. Clean paper bags, with natural trussing twine can make a stylish, and sustainable alternative. Trees: Always go real. A fake tree is full of petroleum and is not biodegradable. One answer is to buy or rent a live tree (see www.livingchristmastrees.org for more information) that can then be planted. Or buy your favorite cut tree and take it to the county recycling facility after the holidays, where it can be turned into mulch. Cards: This year consider going paper-free. Direct friends and family to a web page where you can get as creative as you’d like. Give the mailman and the trees a break. Parties: Though its tempting to buy disposables, consider using metal flatware and real glasses and dishes — especially if you own an Energy Star-certified dishwasher. If you're using disposable, pick recyclable paper, not plastic or Styrofoam. Use cloth tablecloths instead of throwaways. Then wash them in cold water to save energy. And if you need a new party outfit, check out www.treehugger.com for suggestions on how to “green” your wardrobe. Then kick back and toast the holidays with a glass of bubbly (from organic grapes, of course.) The staff at milk + honey wishes you a fantastic holiday season full of friends, family, and wonderful goodness all around. We hope to see you soon!
